Product Junkie

I am still new to the curly hair/natural hair movement so I still trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t work for my hair. I am determined to try quite a few different products. There have to be more than 150 different types of hair cleansing products. I am determined to try just a tiny fraction of them.

I have tried Shea Moisture, but I do want to try a few more of their products. Manuka Honey & Yogurt is a must try. This line is designed to hydrate and repair hair. This line includes a protein treatment, a spray leave-in conditioner, and a split end balm.

The Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil Lush Length Collection is brand new. It is made with THC and CBD Free Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil and Horsetail Extract. This encourages hair growth and moisture. The collection currently only has shampoo, conditioner, and a lite leave-in conditioner.

The Purple Rice Water Collection is a must as well. I have heard nothing but good things about rice water from influencers all over YouTube and even watched some try to make it. Yeah, that’s not me. I’ll leave it to the professionals. This collection is designed for color care, so this is not high on my list of ones to try immediately. The line has shampoo, conditioner, hair masque, oil serum, and primer & styler.

The Coconut Custard Make It Last Wash N’ Go Collection is fairly new as well. It is designed to give you the ultimate wash n’ go style with minimal effort and keep it. This is high on my list to try. It has a shampoo, conditioner, curl revival oil, a curl primer, and a defining gel-oil. This collection can be hard to find. I have managed to find the entire collection in stock in Target. Ulta has a few of the items but typically not all.

I also want to try Pattern Beauty . This collection was designed by Tracee Ellis Ross, who has always been a natural curly hair woman. She stated that this has been in production for more than 10 years. She has designed a hydrating shampoo, three conditioners, a leave-in conditioner, two hair serums (argan and jojoba), a microfiber towel, a shower brush, and a hair clip. Yes three conditioners. The medium conditioner is designed for curlies, the heavy conditioner is designed for coilies, and the intensive is designed for tight textures. It should be noted that this is only available on the Pattern website or Ulta Beauty.

Curl Smith is a collection that I desperately want to try but I do not have the funds to purchase any just yet. Let me explain. I have curly hair (obviously) so according to their website, the best products to use include Hold Me Softly Style Balm, the Curl Defining Gel Souffle, the In-Shower Style Fixer and the Curl Quenching Conditioning Wash. Together they total up to $90. The entire collection totals $220 but can be obtained for $198.00. I put this line in the Devacurl price point.

TGIN means Thank God Its Natural and was started by a Harvard educated Attorney who started the company in 2013. She started the company when she realized there wasn’t a lot of hair products on the market for dry natural hair. The ones that were on the market had outrageous price tags. Her line includes the standard Shampoos, conditioners, leave-ins, and hair masques. Her line also includes items for the scalp and body.

Marc Anthony Strictly curls line. Its the one in the yellow bottles. I’m going to mention this now, this is not silicone free. I came across this while watching YouTube. The woman I watched had similar hair to mine and I figured this could work. They have an entire line including the essentials, but they also added the treatment foam, curling lotion, curling cream, and the 3x moisture styling jelly. I’m excited to use them. Her hair looked absolutely amazing.

Maui Moisture reminds me of Shea Moisture. They have many different lines and colors. Their bottles and labels are eye catching and easy to read. I was introduced to this company via YouTube. Alot of the “influencers” were doing a comparison between the two companies. They would do Maui Moisture products on one side and Shea Moisture on the other. I did some research and thought about adding it to my product shelf. I am looking into the Heal + Hydrate line, the Curl Quench line, the Lightweight Hydration line, and the Nourish + Moisture line. All the products in the line are vegan and the first ingredient is aloe vera juice.

Walking through Ulta one Sunday morning, I came across the Pacifica Pineapple Curls line. The bright and glimmering bottles caught my eye, so of course I had to pick it up and read all about it. The line has no sulfate, parabens, or silicones. So two thumbs up. Its is also petroleum free, cruelty free, and vegan. Its looking good. Knowing my itchy my debit card hand was becoming, I put them back on the shelf, took a picture, and vowed to come home and do some more research before purchasing this.

On another hair shopping trip, I came across the Texture ID line. The texture ID line is designed exclusively for natural haired women. I noticed this line while at my local Beauty shop called Beauty World. It is mainly sold at Sally’s Beauty Supply. Again my debit card hand was itching, but I resisted the urge. Research is needed before any products are to be purchased to avoid mistakes. They currently have a small line but they expect to expand down the road. What I do love about this line is that on the front of every bottle or jar, they tell you what hair type it is for. There is no second guessing or questioning yourself, its right there on the front of the label.

I noticed the Mielle Rosemary Mint Collection because it is one of the very few product lines that states it is designed to promote hair growth. It consists of shampoo, conditioner, hair masque, a scalp and hair strengthening oil (interesting), edge control (I don’t use), and styling creme.

I happened upon Function of Beauty one day by accident. I received a package in the mail and in the box was an envelope that included in it a hodge podge of things to try. Function of Beauty was one of them. I consider this a boutique product line. You get to design and create your own line, so to speak. They ask you a few questions deemed the Hair quiz, including your current hair goals. You can even make sure its silicone free. You pick the scent, color, and name it and voila, your very own shampoo and conditioner. You also pick size and add-ons such as hair masques, leave ins, and hair serum. Now it is not the cheapest, considering it has to be made to your specifications. For 16oz of shampoo and conditioner, its $50.00. Depending on where you live and how often you order, you get get this for around $60 every few months.

You may be wondering why I haven’t listed DevaCurl on this list. I mean it is exclusively for curly haired women. Most curly haired women know it by name and highly recommend it. They even have their own curly hair haircut. They were not included because of recent issues. It seems that many women are losing their curl pattern when using the company’s products. And a lot of the women losing their curl pattern are long time users of the line. Some are even social media influencers. Their initial response to the issue left me in complete shock. How could a company make that statement? After hearing all the tales and horror stories from women, I was thankful I couldn’t afford it.

Honorable Mentions
Not Your Mother’s Line
Melanin
Rizos
Ouidad
Aveeno
Miss Jessie’s
Uncle Funky’s
Camille Rose
Kinky Curly Curl Custard
Moroccanoil Curl Defining Cream

Most of the lines listed above are termed drugstore brands that can be found at many Walgreens, Food Lions, CVS, and other chains. They are also easy on the wallet. I have been noticing lately that the beauty supply aisle in many chains have been stepping up their game. I’ve been finding everything I’ve needed all in one place. And have been noticing alot of new items. Take a stroll through there some time. I think you’ll find yourself pleasantly surprised.
